Lake Express Drydocked in Sturgeon Bay

On Wednesday, October 24th, the Lake Express High Speed Ferry made its way up to Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, WI to be drydocked for scheduled U.S. Coast Guard inspection and periodic planned maintenance.

While in the drydock, the ship will have its hull cleaned and repainted as well as its four 81 inch Rolls Royce water jets rebuilt. The vessel’s hull is also scheduled to undergo inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard.

In order to ensure the reliability of the vessel and its service, the Lake Express has a proactive maintenance program in place.

“We have a new and sophisticated vessel. Our customers rely on us to be available, so we take time each off-season to ensure that reliability” said Lake Express’ President Ken Szallai.

While water jet and hull maintenance will be keynoted this year, past seasons have seen Lake Express add a “T-foil” ride control system to increase passenger comfort and perform significant engine maintenance for reliability. The ship will be in Sturgeon Bay until approximately November 15th, when it will make its way back to Milwaukee to be placed in its winter berth.
